The Parish Family Fun Day was designed for the enjoyment of everyone of all ages, and the sense of ‘family’ was inclusive: nuclear families, extended families, the parish family and friends.
While the event was largely organised by adult volunteers, the children of the parish were indispensable and enthusiastic contributors.
The church was filled to capacity as the children welcomed parishioners to an extra special morning Mass during which the children, assisted by their parents, led the readings and composed their own bidding prayers. The offerings were brought to the altar by four generations of the Murphy/Ruddick family.
Following Mass everyone gathered in the grounds of St Mary’s First School where the shared table was fairly groaning under the weight of so many appealing and delicious contributions. Drinks were served under a marquee staffed by St Mary’s Justice and Peace volunteers.
While the older adults enjoyed relaxing together in the sunshine, the dads supervised games such as rounders and cricket. There was also face painting and the local ice cream van was booked to cater for all who wanted a special dessert.
The weather remained glorious (even though rain had been predicted) and St Mary’s parishioners helped to make our Family Fun Day a success by giving it their first priority -- before heading off to a number of other fun events in Hexham which were scheduled for the same day.
With many thanks our wonderful team of volunteers; we are already looking forward to the next one!
